About the typeface
Albula Condensed Pro is the latest member of the growing Albula typeface family. The distinctive stylistic expression of Albula Pro with its unique form details is clearly noticeable. The clarity with the sharpness of the endings as well as the derivation from the basic geometric forms can still be felt. Thanks to its narrow appearance, Albula Condensed Pro is a excellent choice wherever compactness is required. Be it in the field of branding, packaging design or signage. It’s a match even for narrow text columns and spreadsheets. Just like in the development of its family members, great importance was attached to legibility, so that a good reading experience is guaranteed, whether in a digital or analog use.

Story
After the successful launch of Albula Pro, which is now used in many fantastic projects around the globe, its designer Silvio Meier has given a lot of thought to how to expand and advance with the typeface. Besides the positive feedback we have received from all corners of the world, Albula Pro was ranked among the Best New Fonts 2021 by Myfonts. In order to make Albula even more widely applicable and provide more possibilities for a suitable use, we decided to adapt the typeface to the now released condensed style.
Design Process
Adapting a narrower version of a typeface which derives closely from basic geometric shapes can be surprisingly challenging – especially finding a way to make it work perfectly across all styles including the heaviest and the lightest weights. With its characteristics, it is in the nature of geometric fonts such as Albula Pro that their overall appearance tends to be wide and therefore the opposite of what we were aiming at. It's amazing how many options arise to define these new letterforms in order to preserve the distinctive form language of the origin. Thanks to a lot of testing in different sizes with different letter combinations and in numerous languages, we have always been able to define the ideal shape. The design process took almost a year, during which Sabina Chipară closely supported Silvio Meier with her know-how and experience in all aspects of type design.
Name
The Albula region of the Swiss Alps has lent its name to this typeface, with its alpine pass whose serpentines wind up to 2315 m. The famous Albula–Bernina railroad line, with its imposing constructions from the pioneering period of infrastructure buildings, leads through this region. The mountain crossings are the gateway to Engadine, a remote valley of captivating beauty. For centuries, geometry has been deeply rooted in the local culture, most evident in their houses that have been decorated with geometric shapes, so-called sgraffito, for generations.
Idea
Ever since he started working with typography Silvio Meier has been fascinated by the purist and distinctive formal language of geometric typefaces. As it is known, to find a typeface with a strong character for display applications and a good legibility for longer texts can be a challenge with geometric typefaces. With the Albula family we are trying to master exactly this challenge and are making sure that the deduction from basic geometrics shapes will still be noticeable even with optical corrections applied where necessary.
OpenType features
Thanks to the provided OpenType features, the font contains alternate shapes for selected characters in addition to the original shape. Those alternates can be combined and accessed through the practical and powerful stylistic sets, which allow to adapt the appearance of the typeface to each design. If for example apices and edges are too sharp, they can be softened with the respective stylistic sets activated to achieve a calmer overall impression.
